sinopsis

Cataloge of the exhibition held at Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam.

The last quarter of the 19th century saw Naturalism become one of the dominant movements in painting. This photographic style was international and strikingly homogenous, regardless of whether it concerned Finnish, Hungarian, French or American naturalist artists. Their themes were drawn from daily ‘modern’ life: labourers, farmers, the affluent middle classes; all layers of society served as subjects. This exposition sheds light on the various aspects of Naturalism: its themes, painting practice and the response of critics and the public. Finally, the exhibition examines the impact of these intriguing and often life-size works on early cinematography. From this it emerges that in the Salons and via other public exhibitions art was intended both to educate and entertain, just the same as cinema in the early 20th century. With Illusions of reality: Naturalist painting, photography and cinema 1875–1918 the Van Gogh Museum presents the first retrospective exhibition on Naturalism.
