sinopsis

Nick Waplington lived in Jerusalem for four years, where he depicted the physical and political geography of Jewish settlements in the West Bank. Settlement looks at the topography of Jewish identity in the West Bank, which is in conflict not only with the Palestinian majority but also with mainstream Israeli society: the settlements are isolated, often radical communities that occupy territory deemed illegal by the international community. The work investigates the problematic and contradictory nature of settler identity in the region. Nick Waplington is a British photographer born in Aden, Yemen. His work is held in collections of the Guggenheim Museum, MoMA, and London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. Settlement is part of a project entitled This Place, which explores the complexity of Israel and the West Bank through the eyes of twelve internationally acclaimed photographers.
