Tarda de juliol. Sabateria de poble. De cop entra a la botiga un foraster, un home gran, d'aparença misteriosa. La mestressa en aquests moments no hi és i surt a rebre'l un noi de catorze anys. Es miren. «Necessito unes sabates noves», li diu l'home, «aquestes ja han caminat prou». L'adolescent abaixa els ulls i quan els torna a aixecar pensa que qui ja ha caminat prou és ell. «La meva àvia és a comprar», li contesta, «si vol la pot esperar».
