Adam Elsheimer (1578-1610) "is one of the unsung heroes in the history of Western European art," notes the foreword to this exhibition catalogue, although he is sometimes credited with being an influence on Rembrandt and Peter Paul Rubens. The catalogue reproduces 32 of Elsheimer's 34 known works and contains an introductory essay by Elsheimer scholar Klessmann (formerly director of the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum, Germany) in which he analyzes the artist's development intellectually and philosophically. Also included are essays exploring the relationship of Elsheimer's art with that of his contemporaries and the history of Elsheimer's work in British collections.
