PHILIP GUSTON : WORKS ON PAPER
Category: Contemporary art monographs
The secret motor that powered the development of Guston’s extraordinarily multifaceted oeuvre was his drawing. For decades, the immediacy of drawing offered Guston not only the chance to insistently experiment with unsolved issues, but also the ability to stop and reflect, to critically reorient his work. Ultimately, his obsessive preoccupation with drawing also allowed him to master his profound artistic crisis in the late 1960s. The selection of drawings in this publication sheds light on the development of his drawn works from the 1940s to 1980, the year of Guston’s death.
