THE GUTAI GROUP

The Gutai movement was founded in 1954 in Ashiya between Kobe and Osaka, on the initiative of painter Jiro Yoshihara. Artist such as Shozo Shimamoto, AkiraKanayama, Chiyu Uemae, Tsuruko Yamazaki, Sadamasa Motonaga, Saburo Murakami, Kazuo Shiraga, Fujiko Shiraga, Y asuo Sumi, Atsuko Tanaka and Michio Yoshihara gathered around the movement's charismatic leader.Gutai was active for eighteen years until 1972, the year of Yoshihara's death.
