THE ILLUSTRATION DIVINE COMEDY BY DANTE AND DALÍ

In 1950, to commemorate the 700th anniversary of Dantes birth, the Italian government commissioned Spanish painter Salvador Dalí to produce 100 illustrations for a deluxe edition of The Divine Comedy. Controversy arose over the hiring of a foreigner to illustrate the Italian masterpiece. Although an Italian artist was eventually chosen, Dalí passionately continued to work on the illustrations and, in 1959, supervised publication of a French edition using a high-quality engraving process to stunning effect.
