Born as a private theater in 1863, the Romea is a theater with its own independent look.
The Teatre Romea was born as a private theater in 1863, oriented towards the bourgeoisie and the popular classes. In 1981 it became the Dramatic Center of the Generalitat, fulfilling the role of National Theater until the creation of the National Theater of Catalonia.
It is in 1999 when the Romea begins its new stage under the management of the Grup Focus that entrusts the artistic direction to Calixto Bieito, one of the Spanish stage directors with the most international projection. Since then, the Teatre Romea has become a space of raging artistic news, which is risked with innovative proposals. Transgression, provocation, reflection and entertainment are the hallmark of this production center, generator of contemporary cultural debate. In 2011 the artistic direction of the Teatre Romea passed into the hands of Julio Manrique and in 2014 it was Borja Sitjà who took the reins of the Romea.
Among other prizes, the Teatre Romea has received the Award for the Best Theater Program in Spain, awarded by the International Theater Fair of Huesca in 2005, the Max Award for the Performing Arts as Best Entrepreneur or Theater Producer in 2007, the Gold Medal for Cultural Merit of the City Council of Barcelona, in 2014, and the Creu de Sant Jordi of the Generalitat de Catalunya, in 2015.
