Marenti's mother died alongside her best friend, June, who would soon lose her daughter. Since she could no longer photograph her mother, it seemed natural to photograph June instead. She photographed her hands, her legs, her back, her front, partial views, etc., feeling that she could more easily convince herself that it was her mother by portraying her in fragments. The camera gave them the freedom they needed.
