One of 200 numbered copies on vélin pur fil Lafuma of a total edition of 213. During the German occupation of France, Picasso and De snos, familiar since the 1920ies, often met in the Paris Saint Germain Cafés. Picasso completed the present etching in December 1943 . Desnos' poems, masked calls for resistance against the occupants, are dedicated to Youki, the partner of his days since 1930. In F ebruary 1944, before the book was published, Desnos was arrested by the Gestapo and deported to Theresienstadt where he died in 1945 .
