Promoted by the influential Barcelona businessman Eusebi Güell, the park was originally conceived as an exclusive garden city for wealthy high society families who wanted to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life and be closer to nature. Güell gave Gaudí free rein to design the site, allowing the architect to experiment with new construction techniques and incorporate references to classical mythology, Catalan history and the Christian religion.
