sinopsis

As a foreign correspondent traveling between Mexico and the U.S. in the early twentieth century, Anita Brenner carried Jose Clemente Orozco and Diego Rivera's early drawings to New York. She became the author of Idols Behind Altars, published in 1929, a compendium of the history, customs, religion and art of Mexico, from pre-Hispanic times through the Conquest to the twentieth century. Illustrated with photographs by Edward Weston and Tina Modotti, which were made expressly for the purpose, it altered the trajectory of twentieth-century Mexican art. This volume is published following the centennial of Brenner's birth, and it presents her personal art collection for the first time, with hitherto unpublished work by Rivera, among others, alongside pre-Hispanic and folk art, painting, sculpture, drawings, prints, objects and photographs by Emilio Amero, Agustin Jimenez, Weston and Modotti.
