During the German occupation of France, Picasso and De snos, familiar since the 1920ies, often met in the Paris Saint Germain Cafés. Picasso completed the present etching in December 1943 . Desnos' poems, masked calls for resistance against the occupants, are dedicated to Youki, the partner of his days since 1930.
