Harun Farocki nació en Neutitschein (República Checa) en el año 1944. Entre 1966 y 1968 estudió cine en la Deutsche Film und Fernseh akademie de Berlín. En 1969 realizó su primera película. Desde entonces ha dirigido cerca de un centenar de largometrajes, documenta les para cine y televisión. También es autor de piezas sonoras y de gran cantidad de textos críticos.
