ISLAMIC ART AND BEYOND/ CONSTRUCTING THE STUDY OF ISLAMIC ART

Islamic art and beyond is the third in a set of four volume of studies on Islamic art by Oleg Grabar. The article in the present vol ume illustrate how the author´s study of Islamic art let him in two directions for a further understanding of the art. One is how to define Islamic art, and the other is that of the meanings to be given to forms like domes, or to terms like symbol, sign or aesthet ic values, so characteristic of the Islamic art, in the arts of other cultures, especially when one considers the contemporany world .
